What Happens During an Irrigation Backflow Test

The backflow preventer test is a pressure-differential test that verifies the internal check valves and relief valve inside the backflow preventer are functioning correctly. The tester connects calibrated test gauges to the test cocks on the backflow preventer, closes and opens the gate valves in a specific sequence, and reads the pressure differential across each internal check valve. The test takes 15-25 minutes on a typical residential reduced-pressure zone assembly. A pass result is recorded on the City of Calgary test form and submitted electronically. A fail result means the backflow preventer requires repair or replacement before the next season.
