A Calgary irrigation system inspection finds problems before they become expensive failures. Most Calgary homeowners only discover irrigation issues when a head stops working or a zone fails to run โ at which point repair costs are higher than if the issue had been caught during a proactive inspection. This guide covers when to schedule a Calgary irrigation inspection, what is checked, and what the findings mean.
When to Schedule a Calgary Irrigation System Inspection
Mandatory Inspection: spring startup
Every Calgary irrigation system requires a spring startup inspection before the first watering cycle of the season. This inspection catches any damage that occurred over winter (freeze damage, settlement, rodent damage to wiring). Every J.G. Irrigation spring startup includes a full zone-by-zone inspection as part of the startup commissioning. Scheduling: book by February for a May service date. Call 587-433-4795.
Recommended Inspection: Mid-Season Tune-Up (June-July)
A mid-season inspection between June and July catches problems that were not visible at spring startup: heads that have settled into the turf; nozzles that have clogged with Calgary mineral deposits after several weeks of operation; dry strips that indicate coverage gaps; runoff that indicates over-application or nozzle mismatch. J.G. Irrigation mid-season tune-up services are available for both individual booking and as part of seasonal maintenance contracts.
Water Bill Anomaly Inspection
If your City of Calgary water bill increases by $30 or more compared to the same billing period in the previous year, without a corresponding increase in household use, schedule an irrigation leak inspection immediately. A continuously running zone valve (stuck open), a mainline break, or a failed backflow preventer check valve can add 5,000 to 15,000 litres per billing period to your Calgary water bill. J.G. Irrigation provides same-day or next-day Calgary irrigation leak inspection. Call 587-433-4795.
Age-Based Full System Audit
A Calgary irrigation system approaching 10 to 12 years of service should receive a full system audit that assesses all components against their expected service life: backflow preventer internals (7 to 12 year replacement cycle); zone valve solenoids (10 to 15 year cycle); nozzles (8 to 12 year cycle for standard spray; longer for MP Rotators); mainline connections at manifold (assess for corrosion and joint separation); and controller (assess for programming module reliability).
What Is Checked in a Full Calgary Irrigation System Inspection
Zone-by-Zone Coverage Walk
Every head in every zone is observed operating. The technician checks: pop-up height (settled heads under-apply water to the surrounding area); arc and radius (heads shifted by mowing, foot traffic, or ground movement); nozzle condition (clogging, cracking, missing); rotation (rotors and MP Rotators that have stopped rotating); and inter-zone overlap (adjacent zones should provide head-to-head coverage, meaning each head should reach the adjacent head).
Pressure Testing
Working pressure is measured at the backflow preventer and compared against the zone head pressure during operation. A pressure drop greater than 10 PSI between the source and the farthest head in a zone indicates either: too many heads on the zone for the available flow; a partial blockage (fouled zone valve, debris in mainline); or a slow underground leak drawing pressure. J.G. Irrigation uses a calibrated pressure gauge for all inspection pressure tests.
Backflow Preventer Inspection and Test
The backflow preventer assembly is inspected for: body cracks; relief valve dripping (indicating failed first check valve); test cock condition; and backflow test certification status. City of Calgary commercial properties require annual testing certification. J.G. Irrigation performs backflow preventer testing and certification for both residential and commercial Calgary properties. Call 587-433-4795.
Controller and Wiring Inspection
The controller is checked for: correct date and time; current seasonal schedule; odd/even Calgary restriction compliance; zone assignments and runtime accuracy; and any fault codes. Zone wiring is checked for: correct connection at the controller terminals; damaged insulation from winter settlement or rodent activity; and clean solenoid connections at each zone valve.
Water Efficiency Assessment
As an optional component of the inspection, J.G. Irrigation can perform a Calgary water efficiency assessment: catch-cup precipitation rate test to measure actual application rate per zone; comparison against Calgary ET data for the current season; identification of over-watered and under-watered zones; and recommendation of nozzle upgrades, run time adjustments, or controller programming changes to reduce water use while maintaining coverage.
Cost of a Calgary Irrigation System Inspection
J.G. Irrigation Calgary irrigation inspection pricing:
- Spring startup inspection (included with spring startup commissioning): $120 to $175 depending on zone count
- Mid-season tune-up inspection (standalone): $95 to $150 depending on zone count
- Full system audit (age-based, 10+ year systems): $175 to $285 depending on system size; includes written report with component condition, estimated remaining service life, and recommended actions
- Leak inspection (water bill anomaly): $75 service call fee applied to repair total if repair is completed same-day
All J.G. Irrigation inspection findings are documented in a written report emailed same-day, listing zone-by-zone head condition, pressure readings, backflow preventer status, and all recommended repairs with estimated costs. Call 587-433-4795 to schedule a Calgary irrigation system inspection.
