Calgary Sprinkler Head Replacement: When to Replace Heads and What They Cost 2026

Sprinkler Head Replacement in Calgary: When Heads Need to Be Replaced

Sprinkler heads in Calgary have a typical service life of 8-15 years depending on the head type, brand, and how the system has been maintained. Calgary freeze-thaw cycling subjects heads to more stress than warmer climates — the soil movement and freeze expansion can crack head bodies, damage wiper seals, and deform the retract springs that pull popup heads back below the surface. Most Calgary irrigation systems 10 years or older have at least a few heads that need replacement at spring startup.

Signs a Calgary Sprinkler Head Needs Replacement

• Head does not retract fully after zone shuts off: Wiper seal failure or damaged retract spring. Heads left above grade get hit by mowers and damaged within one season.
• Head sprays in wrong arc despite adjustment: Internal arc mechanism worn or stripped. Some budget heads cannot hold arc adjustment after 5-7 years of freeze-thaw cycling.
• Head leaks at the base or around the popup stem: Cracked housing or degraded O-ring seal. A single leaking head can waste 4-8 litres per minute during zone operation.
• Head pops up but does not rotate: Gear drive mechanism failure in rotor heads. Sand and mineral deposits from Calgary water accumulate in the gear drive over time.
• Coverage radius significantly shorter than spec: Worn or clogged nozzle that cannot be cleaned by filter replacement alone.
