What does a professional Calgary irrigation system design include?

A professional Calgary irrigation system design from J and G Irrigation includes a water pressure measurement at the proposed supply connection, flow rate assessment, soil type confirmation, and scaled property measurement to define all irrigated area boundaries. The zone layout design addresses head-to-head coverage so every point of the irrigated area is within reach of at least two opposing heads, matched precipitation rate within each zone to prevent dry and wet spots, and correct zone type assignment ensuring turf spray zones, bed drip zones, and rotor zones are on separate zone valves. A written scaled zone plan is produced as the design deliverable before installation begins.

Why is head-to-head coverage important in Calgary irrigation design?

Head-to-head coverage means every point in an irrigation zone is covered by the spray or rotor reach of at least two heads from opposing or adjacent positions. This design standard is important in Calgary for two reasons: first, it ensures every point receives the full design precipitation rate even if one head is slightly misaimed or partially blocked, eliminating the dry spots that appear on poorly designed systems when any single head underperforms; second, it provides redundancy so that normal head wear, minor position shifts from Calgary clay soil settling, and nozzle filter deposits do not immediately produce visible dry zones.

Does J and G Irrigation provide the irrigation zone design plan to homeowners?

Yes. J and G Irrigation provides a written scaled zone design plan to every irrigation installation customer before work begins. The design plan shows every zone boundary, head position and type, valve location, pipe route, and controller wiring assignment. A copy of the as-built plan is retained by the homeowner for future reference — this is the service document that makes it possible for any qualified irrigation technician to service the system accurately in future years without guessing at zone layouts or pipe routes. The zone plan is also essential for homeowners planning landscaping additions that might affect the irrigation system.

When should I winterize my sprinklers in Calgary?

Calgary sprinkler systems should be winterized before the first hard freeze, typically between late September and mid-October. Booking by September is recommended as appointment slots fill up quickly. A hard freeze (below -4°C overnight) can crack irrigation pipes within hours.

What happens if you don't winterize your sprinklers in Calgary?

Skipping winterization in Calgary can result in cracked pipes, burst valves, broken backflow preventers, and damaged sprinkler heads from ice expansion. Repair costs from freeze damage typically run $300 to $1,500 or more — far exceeding the cost of a professional blowout.

Can I winterize my own sprinkler system?

DIY sprinkler blowouts require a compressor rated at 20+ CFM at 50 PSI and precise knowledge of your zone layout. Improper technique can damage head diaphragms, crack PVC fittings, or leave water in low spots that will freeze. Most Calgary homeowners find professional blowout service the safer and more reliable option.

When should I turn on my sprinklers in Calgary in spring?

The safe window to activate your Calgary sprinkler system is mid-May to early June, once overnight temperatures are consistently above 0°C and the ground has fully thawed to at least 6 inches deep. Activating too early risks pipe damage from ground frost.

What does a spring sprinkler startup include in Calgary?

A professional spring startup includes slowly opening the main water supply valve, pressurizing each zone, inspecting every sprinkler head for damage, adjusting head rotation and arc, checking the backflow preventer, testing the controller schedule, and confirming full coverage across all zones.

How do I know if my sprinkler system has a leak?

Common signs of a Calgary sprinkler leak include soggy or waterlogged patches on your lawn, a sudden spike in your water bill, uneven watering across zones, sprinkler heads that stay up after the system shuts off, unusually green stripes in the grass, and soft or sinking spots in the yard.

How many zones does my Calgary property need?

A standard Calgary single-family home requires 4-6 zones. A large property or corner lot requires 6-9 zones. Zone count is determined by total irrigated area, water pressure and flow rate at the tap, and landscaping type, since turf zones and drip zones are always designed separately.

What is the difference between spray zones and rotor zones in Calgary irrigation design?

Spray zones use fixed spray heads or MP Rotary nozzles for close-in coverage up to 4.5 metres radius. Rotor zones use gear-driven heads for longer-range coverage of 4-10 metres. Calgary front lawns typically use spray zones with MP Rotary nozzles. Large back lawns use rotor zones based on area dimensions.
