Drip Irrigation System Calgary: Design and Installation for Efficient Watering 2026

Drip Irrigation Systems in Calgary: The Most Efficient Watering Method

A drip irrigation system in Calgary delivers water directly to the root zone of plants at a slow, controlled rate that matches the absorption capacity of the soil — eliminating the two primary sources of water waste in standard Calgary spray and rotor systems: evaporation from wet bare soil between plants, and surface runoff from precipitation rates exceeding Calgary clay infiltration capacity. Drip systems save 30-50% of water compared to overhead spray on the same planted areas while producing significantly better plant health outcomes by keeping foliage dry.

Drip Irrigation System Components for Calgary

• Zone valve with pressure regulator: A dedicated zone valve with a 15-25 PSI pressure regulator steps the Calgary supply pressure (50-80 PSI) down to the drip emitter operating range. Running drip emitters at full supply pressure causes emitters to blow off their barbs and fail immediately.
• 100-150 mesh filter: Installed after the pressure regulator to protect small-diameter drip emitters from the mineral deposits in Calgary water. Without a filter, emitters clog within 1-3 seasons.
• Supply tubing: 16mm polyethylene main distribution tube buried at 30 cm depth connecting the zone valve to the planted area. All supply tubing must be buried to prevent UV degradation and freeze damage.
• Emitter type — point-source or inline: Point-source emitters (0.5-2 GPH per plant) for individual plant placement; inline drip tube (emitters at 15-30 cm spacing) for rows and garden bed area coverage. Pressure-compensating versions are required for Calgary sloped installations.

Calgary Drip Irrigation System Installation Cost

• Drip zone addition to existing sprinkler system (per zone): $400-$800
• New dedicated drip system (small property, 2-3 drip zones): $1,500-$3,000
• Acreage drip system (orchard, large garden): Custom quoted
