The water drips out at a measured rate (typically 0.5 to 2 gallons per hour per emitter) and soaks straight down into the root zone. Nothing sprays through the air. Nothing wets the leaves. Nothing runs off onto the sidewalk.
The difference matters because of what you are watering. Grass needs even surface coverage — sprinklers are built for that. Shrubs, perennials, and vegetables need water at their roots — drip delivers that with almost zero waste.

The Advantages of Drip Irrigation
Water savings of 30 to 50 percent compared to sprinklers. Drip puts water directly into the soil with zero overspray, zero wind drift, and zero evaporation during flight. Every drop goes where it is supposed to. Calgary’s tiered water rates mean those savings translate directly to your bill.

You can run drip any day, at any time — though early morning is still best practice.
Easy to modify. Adding a new plant? Punch another emitter into the tubing. Removing a plant? Plug the hole. Redesigning the bed? Pull up the tubing and re-lay it. Drip systems are far more flexible than buried sprinkler lines.
The Disadvantages of Drip Irrigation
Higher upfront installation labor. Laying out drip tubing, placing emitters at each plant, and securing everything takes more time per square foot than installing sprinkler heads. The materials cost is lower — poly tubing and emitters are cheap — but the labor is higher because of the individual emitter placement.
Calgary winterization is different — and critical. Drip tubing holds water in low spots just like sprinkler pipes. If not properly blown out, ice expansion splits the tubing and cracks the emitters. The blowout process for drip is different than for sprinklers: lower air pressure (30 to 40 PSI instead of 50 to 60), slower flow, and careful attention to emitter blowout. More on this below.
Emitters can clog. Calgary’s hard water contains minerals that can build up inside emitters over time. A proper drip system includes a filter at the zone valve to catch sediment before it reaches the emitters. The filter needs to be cleaned annually. Without one, emitters clog within 2 to 3 seasons.
Not suitable for lawns. Drip cannot cover large turf areas evenly. The tubing would need to be spaced every 12 to 18 inches across the entire lawn — impractical and expensive. Drip is for plants, shrubs, and trees. Sprinklers are for turf.
How Drip Irrigation Handles Calgary Winters
This is the section that matters most. Drip irrigation fails in Calgary for one reason more than any other: improper winterization. The poly tubing and emitters are more delicate than sprinkler pipe and heads. Here is how to winterize drip correctly.
Blowout pressure must be lower. Sprinkler lines are blown out at 50 to 60 PSI. Drip tubing should be blown at 30 to 40 PSI maximum. Higher pressure can blow emitters off the tubing or split the tubing itself.
Blowout takes longer. Drip tubing is smaller diameter and holds less volume, but the emitters release air slowly. Each zone needs to run longer during blowout to ensure all water is expelled — typically 3 to 5 minutes per zone versus 2 to 3 minutes for sprinklers.
Filters must be drained and cleaned. The filter at the drip zone valve traps water and sediment. Remove the filter housing, clean the screen, and leave it open for winter. A frozen filter housing cracks just like a valve body.
Pressure regulators must be drained. Drip systems require a pressure regulator at the zone valve to step down from standard line pressure (40 to 60 PSI) to drip operating pressure (20 to 30 PSI). The regulator must be drained or blown out. If water freezes inside, the diaphragm tears and the regulator fails — the first time you run the zone in spring, full line pressure hits the drip tubing and blows emitters off.

Can You Mix Drip and Sprinklers on the Same System
Yes — and most well-designed Calgary landscapes do exactly this. Turf zones use spray heads or rotors. Garden bed zones use drip. They run off the same controller, on different zone valves, with different run times.
A drip zone requires three components that a sprinkler zone does not:
Pressure regulator. Reduces line pressure to 20 to 30 PSI. Installed at the zone valve. Without it, standard line pressure blows emitters off the tubing.
Filter. Catches sediment before it reaches the emitters. Installed after the pressure regulator. Clean annually.
Drip tubing and emitters. ½-inch poly tubing with pre-installed or punch-in emitters at each plant. Emitter flow rates vary — 0.5 GPH for small perennials, 1 GPH for shrubs, 2 GPH for large shrubs and small trees.
A drip zone typically runs longer than a sprinkler zone — 30 to 60 minutes versus 15 to 30 minutes — because the application rate is much slower. The controller is programmed per zone, so drip zones get their own schedule.
