Hail Damage to Irrigation Systems in Calgary: Assessment, Repair & Insurance Guide

Calgary Hail and Irrigation Systems: What You Need to Know

Calgary is one of the most hail-prone cities in Canada. The Insurance Bureau of Canada has ranked Calgary among the highest-risk hail zones in the country, with significant hail events occurring multiple times per summer season. June through August produces the majority of Calgary hail events, with some storms producing hail exceeding 5 cm in diameter. Irrigation systems are particularly vulnerable to hail damage because popup spray heads have exposed retractable stems that are directly in the path of falling hail when the system is running or has recently run.

What Hail Damages on a Calgary Irrigation System

Popup Spray Heads

The most common hail damage to Calgary irrigation systems occurs on popup spray heads. The retractable stem extends 5-10 cm above grade when the zone is active. A hailstone striking the extended stem at velocity can:

  • Crack or split the stem (the head will not retract after zone shutoff)
  • Snap the nozzle off the stem (the zone runs but no spray pattern forms)
  • Shatter the nozzle screen (causing uneven spray pattern and clogging)
  • Damage the popup spring mechanism (head retracts slowly or incompletely)

Rotor Heads

Gear-drive rotor heads have a more robust body than spray heads but the exposed upper body and turret can be damaged by large hail. The turbine drive mechanism is particularly vulnerable to impact โ€” a strike on the exposed turret can strip the gear assembly inside, leaving the rotor unable to rotate.

Above-Ground Drip Components

Above-ground drip emitter lines and poly tubing are vulnerable to direct hail impact, which can crack the emitter bodies and punch holes in the supply tubing. Drip systems running along garden beds and in areas without overhead vegetation cover are most exposed.

Assessing Hail Damage to Your Calgary Irrigation System

After any Calgary hail event, run each irrigation zone for 3-5 minutes and walk the coverage area looking for:

  • Heads that do not retract after the zone shuts off (cracked stem, stuck turret)
  • Zones with significantly reduced coverage radius (cracked head body reducing internal pressure)
  • Geysering water from a head position rather than a spray pattern (stem snapped or cap blown off)
  • Zones with no output from specific head positions (head body cracked and seal failed, causing water to spray into soil rather than upward)
  • Standing water around head positions (the head is fractured and leaking at grade rather than spraying)

Calgary Hail Damage Repair Costs for Irrigation Systems

Damage Type Repair Cost
Spray head replacement (stem crack) $45-$85 per head
Nozzle cap replacement only $25-$45 per head
Rotor head replacement $65-$120 per head
Multiple head replacement (4+ heads, same zone) Reduced per-head rate
Full zone head replacement Quote by zone size

J&G Irrigation offers post-hail assessment service for $85 (credited toward any repair completed in the same service season). For multi-head damage on a large system, we provide a written quote showing per-head counts so you can also submit to your home insurance.

Calgary Home Insurance and Irrigation Hail Damage

Calgary home insurance policies (standard IBC form) typically cover sudden and accidental hail damage to permanently installed property components. Underground lateral pipes are covered in most policies. Above-ground popup heads are also covered by most policies when damaged by hail.

To file an insurance claim for Calgary irrigation hail damage, you will need:

  • A written assessment report from a licensed irrigation contractor identifying the damage and repair cost
  • The date of the hail event (Insurance Bureau of Canada logs all significant Calgary hail events by date and postal code)
  • Photos of damaged heads if possible before repair

J&G Irrigation provides written assessment reports suitable for insurance submission. After any significant Calgary hail event, call 587-433-4795 to book a post-hail irrigation assessment with a J&G technician.
