Calgary’s climate is semi-arid with extremely variable summer rainfall — some weeks bring heavy rain, others bring chinook-driven heat with no precipitation for 3+ weeks. An optimal Calgary lawn irrigation schedule adjusts to these conditions rather than running on a fixed timer. This guide gives you exact watering frequencies and durations by season.
Calgary Irrigation Schedule — By Season and Grass Type
| Season | Frequency | Duration (per zone) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| May (startup month) | 2-3x per week | 8-12 min (rotary), 5-8 min (spray) | Cool temps, lower ET — shorter runs |
| June | 3x per week | 12-18 min (rotary), 6-10 min (spray) | Adjust if rain exceeds 1 inch/week |
| July (peak demand) | 3-4x per week | 18-25 min (rotary), 10-14 min (spray) | Chinook weeks: up to 5x/week for clay soil |
| August | 3x per week | 15-20 min (rotary), 8-12 min (spray) | Temperatures begin to moderate |
| September | 2x per week | 10-15 min (rotary), 6-8 min (spray) | Reduce gradually — stop before winterization |
Calgary Clay Soil — Why Standard Schedules Do Not Work
Calgary residential properties are predominantly clay or clay-loam soil. Clay soil absorbs water at 0.2-0.3 inches per hour — roughly 20% the rate of sandy soil. Standard irrigation schedules designed for other climates or soil types cause surface runoff on Calgary clay. The fix: shorter, more frequent cycles (cycle-and-soak). Run each zone for 8-10 minutes, skip 30 minutes, then run again. Rachio and Hydrawise both have cycle-and-soak built in as “Smart Cycle” mode.
What is the City of Calgary recommended irrigation schedule?
Calgary Water recommends watering early morning (5-9 AM) to reduce evaporation. No specific frequency mandate, but they recommend 1 inch per week total application (rain + irrigation). A smart controller with weather data automatically adjusts for this. J.G. Irrigation installs Rachio 3 smart controllers — $75 City of Calgary rebate available. Call 587-433-4795.
