Calgary’s irrigation market has grown significantly over the past decade. More contractors means more options — and unfortunately, more variation in quality, experience, and honesty. If you’re getting quotes for a new irrigation system installation or looking for a reliable contractor to take over your seasonal service, this guide gives you the eight questions that separate professional irrigation companies from the ones you’ll regret hiring.
Why Choosing the Right Calgary Irrigation Company Matters
An irrigation system is a permanent installation in your property. Mistakes made during installation — incorrect burial depth, wrong head type for your soil, improperly sized zones, no backflow preventer — don’t become apparent until the second or third season, when you’re dealing with freeze damage, coverage failures, or a City of Calgary compliance notice. Choosing a reputable contractor from the start costs the same as choosing the wrong one, and saves years of escalating service issues.
Question 1: Are You Fully Insured and Licensed to Work in Calgary?
This is non-negotiable. Any irrigation contractor working on Calgary residential or commercial properties must carry:
- General liability insurance (minimum $2 million recommended for residential work): Covers property damage and third-party injury if something goes wrong during installation or service.
- Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) coverage for all employees: Protects you from liability if a worker is injured on your property.
- Business license: Most Calgary irrigation contractors are not required to hold a trade-specific licence for low-pressure irrigation work (distinct from plumbing), but they should have a valid Alberta business licence.
Ask for a certificate of insurance and confirm the coverage is current. Contractors who hesitate or refuse to provide this documentation should be disqualified immediately.

Question 2: What Brand of Components Do You Install?
The brand of sprinkler heads, valves, and controller installed determines how long your system lasts and how easily it can be serviced. The professional standard in Calgary is Hunter or RainBird for heads and valves. Consumer-grade brands (Orbit and equivalent) have no place in a professional permanent installation.
A contractor who can’t name the specific head model and valve brand they’re specifying on your quote — or who is vague about this — is a warning sign. Unspecified components are often low-cost consumer-grade products that contractors substitute to increase margin.

Question 3: What Are Your Warranty Terms in Writing?
A reputable irrigation company provides written warranty terms on their quote or contract. Industry standard for Calgary new residential installation is 1–2 years labour warranty and 1 year parts warranty. Any contractor offering less than 1 year on a new installation should be pressed on why, and the warranty must be in writing — verbal warranties are unenforceable.

Question 4: Who Actually Does the Installation — Your Own Crew or Subcontractors?
Some irrigation contractors in Calgary take on more work than they can deliver with their own team, then subcontract installations to lower-cost crews. This is not inherently wrong, but it creates accountability gaps: if something goes wrong, the contractor may blame the sub; the sub may not be familiar with the company’s specifications; and the quality control that the company’s own crew applies doesn’t extend to the sub’s work.
Ask: “Is your installation crew your own employees or subcontractors?” Owners and experienced owner-operated crews typically deliver more consistent work and are more personally invested in the outcome.

Question 5: How Do You Handle Winterization — What Equipment Do You Use?
The annual winterization blowout requires a commercial-capacity air compressor (50–85 CFM). A contractor using a small portable compressor (<20 CFM) cannot adequately clear Calgary irrigation systems in a single session. Incomplete winterization is the leading cause of freeze damage in Calgary irrigation systems.
Ask specifically: “What size compressor do you use for winterization?” and “How many passes per zone do you perform?” The correct answers are 50+ CFM and a minimum of 2–3 passes per zone. A contractor who says “one pass” or who can’t specify their equipment is cutting corners on the most critical annual maintenance step.

Question 6: Do You Test Water Pressure and Flow Before Designing the System?
A proper irrigation design requires measuring your home’s static water pressure and available flow rate before specifying zones and heads. Without this measurement, a contractor is guessing at zone sizes. Oversized zones (too many heads per zone) result in low-pressure performance and uneven coverage — a design defect that can’t be fixed without redesigning the zone layout.

Calgary’s Cross-Connection Control Bylaw requires annual testing of all irrigation system backflow preventers by a certified tester. Not all irrigation contractors in Calgary are certified. Hiring a contractor who can’t perform your annual backflow test means you’ll need a separate service provider for this mandatory annual requirement — an inefficiency you can avoid by choosing a contractor who is certified from the start.
