Irrigation Winterization Checklist Calgary 2026 — 8 Steps Before Your Fall Blowout

Calgary Irrigation Winterization Checklist — 8 Steps

A professional sprinkler blowout takes 30 to 60 minutes. What you do before the technician arrives determines whether the blowout is complete or leaves hidden vulnerabilities. J.G. Irrigation performs fall blowout across all Calgary communities, Airdrie, Cochrane, and Okotoks using 185 CFM commercial compressors and IA-certified technicians. 1. Book early — Calgary blowout season fills by late September. Book in August for guaranteed September scheduling. Calling in late September for same-week appointments means taking cancellation slots or less favourable dates.
  2. Locate your irrigation shutoff valve — typically in the mechanical room or basement near the water meter. Not knowing its location adds 5 to 15 minutes to the visit. Confirm the valve can be fully closed before the technician arrives.
  3. Locate your backflow preventer — typically a brass assembly on the exterior wall or above the shutoff valve inside. The blowout compressor connects here. Clear any plants or equipment blocking access.
  4. Confirm your zone count and note problem zones — check the controller and tell the technician which zones had low pressure, failed to activate, or showed fault codes this season. Problem zones need extra attention during blowout.
  5. Run each zone once in the 3–5 days before blowout — a zone that won't run cannot be blown out. If a zone fails to activate, call J.G. Irrigation to add a zone valve repair to the blowout visit.
  6. Disable automatic watering 48 hours before blowout — set the controller to OFF (not RAIN DELAY) so laterals aren't freshly saturated. This reduces the volume of water to be purged per zone and speeds the process.
  7. Clear access to the compressor connection point — move lawn furniture, garden equipment, or vehicles that block access to the side or back of the house where the backflow preventer is located. The compressor hose typically requires 30 to 50 feet of clearance.
  8. Request a written blowout receipt — a professional Calgary blowout receipt documents: date, zone count, technician name and certification, observations, and any components flagged for spring attention. J.G. Irrigation provides written receipts on every blowout visit. A contractor who cannot provide written documentation is a quality red flag.

Blowout deadlines by community: Airdrie/Cochrane by October 1; Calgary NW/SW ridge by October 3–4; Calgary SW/SE by October 5–6; Calgary NE and inner city by October 7–8. Call J.G. Irrigation at 587-433-4795 to book.
