What is the difference between low voltage and line voltage outdoor lighting in Calgary?

Low voltage outdoor landscape lighting in Calgary operates at 12 volts AC or DC, stepped down from the 120V household supply by a landscape transformer. Low voltage is safety extra-low voltage, which means it can be installed without an electrical contractor permit and is safe to handle during installation and maintenance. Line voltage outdoor lighting operates at the full 120V supply and requires a licensed electrical contractor for all installation and wiring work. J and G Irrigation installs 12V low voltage landscape lighting systems and coordinates with licensed electrical contractors for any 120V work such as parking lot area lighting.

How many fixtures can a low voltage transformer power in Calgary?

The number of fixtures a Calgary landscape lighting transformer can power depends on the transformer wattage and the wattage of each connected fixture. A 150-watt transformer running LED fixtures at an average of 5 watts per fixture can power 24 fixtures at 80 percent of rated capacity. A 300-watt transformer can power approximately 48 fixtures at the same load. J and G Irrigation sizes all Calgary landscape lighting transformers to 80 percent of rated capacity to allow future fixture additions without overloading, and recommends the next transformer size up when total planned fixture wattage exceeds this threshold.

How far can low voltage cable run from the transformer in Calgary?

The maximum effective low voltage cable run from a Calgary landscape lighting transformer is determined by the acceptable voltage drop at the furthest fixture. J and G Irrigation uses 12/2 direct-burial cable for runs up to approximately 30 metres from the transformer, and upgrades to 10/2 heavier gauge cable for runs beyond 30 metres. Fixtures at the end of a long run that receive less than 10.8 volts, which is 90 percent of the nominal 12V, produce noticeably dimmer output than fixtures close to the transformer. Multi-zone smart transformers mitigate this by allowing separate output voltage adjustment per zone.

How much does sprinkler winterization cost in Calgary?

Professional sprinkler winterization in Calgary costs $80 to $150 for most residential systems depending on the number of zones. J.G. Irrigation offers flat-rate pricing with no surprise fees. Call 587-433-4795 for an exact quote.

When should I winterize my sprinklers in Calgary?

Calgary sprinkler systems should be winterized before the first hard freeze, typically between late September and mid-October. Booking by September is recommended as appointment slots fill up quickly. A hard freeze (below -4°C overnight) can crack irrigation pipes within hours.

What happens if you don't winterize your sprinklers in Calgary?

Skipping winterization in Calgary can result in cracked pipes, burst valves, broken backflow preventers, and damaged sprinkler heads from ice expansion. Repair costs from freeze damage typically run $300 to $1,500 or more — far exceeding the cost of a professional blowout.

Can I winterize my own sprinkler system?

DIY sprinkler blowouts require a compressor rated at 20+ CFM at 50 PSI and precise knowledge of your zone layout. Improper technique can damage head diaphragms, crack PVC fittings, or leave water in low spots that will freeze. Most Calgary homeowners find professional blowout service the safer and more reliable option.

When should I turn on my sprinklers in Calgary in spring?

The safe window to activate your Calgary sprinkler system is mid-May to early June, once overnight temperatures are consistently above 0°C and the ground has fully thawed to at least 6 inches deep. Activating too early risks pipe damage from ground frost.

What does a spring sprinkler startup include in Calgary?

A professional spring startup includes slowly opening the main water supply valve, pressurizing each zone, inspecting every sprinkler head for damage, adjusting head rotation and arc, checking the backflow preventer, testing the controller schedule, and confirming full coverage across all zones.

How do I know if my sprinkler system has a leak?

Common signs of a Calgary sprinkler leak include soggy or waterlogged patches on your lawn, a sudden spike in your water bill, uneven watering across zones, sprinkler heads that stay up after the system shuts off, unusually green stripes in the grass, and soft or sinking spots in the yard.

How fast can J.G. Irrigation fix a broken sprinkler system?

J.G. Irrigation offers same-week sprinkler repair service across Calgary. Most residential repairs — broken heads, leaking valves, stuck pop-ups — are completed in 1 to 3 hours. Call 587-433-4795 or book online for priority scheduling.

How much does sprinkler repair cost in Calgary?

Sprinkler repair in Calgary typically costs $75 to $250 for common issues like broken heads, stuck pop-ups, or clogged nozzles. Valve replacements run $100 to $300. Underground pipe repairs depend on depth and length but usually fall between $200 and $600 for residential systems.
