Low water pressure is one of the most common sprinkler system complaints in Calgary — and one of the most misdiagnosed. Before assuming the system needs a major repair, it is important to identify whether the pressure problem is at the meter, the backflow, the zone valve, or the heads themselves. This guide covers Calgary-specific causes and repair costs.
Low Sprinkler Pressure — Diagnosis by Location
| Where Low Pressure Occurs | Likely Cause | DIY Check | Repair Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| All zones, all heads | Municipal supply issue or main shutoff not fully open | Check main shutoff valve is fully open | Free (DIY) |
| All zones, progressive worsening | Backflow preventer restriction (sediment in test cocks) | Call professional — backflow work is regulated | $80-$180 |
| One zone only | Valve not opening fully, line break, filter blockage | Check filter screen in valve; listen for hissing | $60-$200 |
| 2-3 heads on one zone | Too many heads on one zone, or heads too far from valve | Count heads per zone (should be 4-8 spray, 3-5 rotary) | $150-$400 (redesign) |
Normal irrigation pressure in Calgary residential areas: 40-65 PSI at the meter. For irrigation, pressure regulators built into pop-up heads reduce this to 30-45 PSI at the nozzle. Low pressure below 25 PSI causes heads to not pop up fully and poor coverage patterns.
How much does it cost to fix low water pressure on a Calgary sprinkler system?
Depends on cause: Main shutoff adjustment (free DIY). Backflow cleaning: $80-$180. Zone valve repair: $120-$280. Line break repair: $150-$500. Zone redesign (too many heads): $200-$500. J.G. Irrigation provides a flat-rate $60 service call that includes diagnosis. Call 587-433-4795.
