6 Causes of Low Pressure in a Calgary Sprinkler System

1. Too Many Zones Running Simultaneously

The most common cause. If your controller is set to run overlapping zones (or a zone was manually triggered while another runs), your total flow demand exceeds what the pipe can deliver — and pressure drops across all active zones. Check your controller for any active manual overrides and ensure only one zone runs at a time.

2. Partially Closed Shutoff Valve

The main irrigation shutoff (at meter or basement) may not be fully open after spring startup. A gate valve only 75% open can reduce flow significantly. Ensure the valve handle is fully turned (gate valve) or fully parallel to the pipe (ball valve).

3. Main Line Break or Leak

An underground main line break bleeds pressure before it reaches your zones. Signs: one area of lawn is consistently wet or soggy even when no zones are running; water pressure drops progressively across the season. A main line break requires excavation and repair: $150–$800+ depending on depth and location.

4. Pressure Regulator Failure

Some Calgary homes (especially newer NW/SW communities) have a pressure regulator on the irrigation supply to protect components from high municipal pressure. If this regulator fails or is set too low, it restricts flow to the entire system. Test: bypass the regulator temporarily and check if pressure improves.

5. Low Municipal Supply Pressure

Calgary municipal water pressure varies significantly by neighbourhood and elevation. West-side communities (Signal Hill, Cougar Ridge, Springbank Hill) often have lower static pressure due to elevation. If your system was designed for 60 PSI but your municipality delivers 40 PSI, every zone underperforms. Solution: redesign zone layouts for lower flow or install a booster pump.

6. Clogged or Damaged Sprinkler Heads

Sand, debris, and mineral deposits clog nozzle filters over time — especially after a main line break or after sandy spring water clears through. Symptom: specific heads in a zone spray weakly while others in the same zone are fine. Unscrew the head, remove the nozzle, rinse the filter screen, and reinstall. If the head is cracked or the nozzle won’t clean, replace it.

How to Diagnose Low Pressure in a Calgary Sprinkler System

Work through these in order before calling for service — the first three you can check yourself in 15 minutes:

1. Check the indoor shutoff valve position: A partially closed main irrigation valve reduces flow to all zones. Find the shutoff valve in your mechanical room and confirm it is fully open (handle parallel to the pipe). A valve that is even 25% closed significantly reduces available pressure.
2. Inspect the backflow preventer handles: Both handles on the backflow preventer (mounted outside your house) must be fully parallel to the pipe. A handle at 45 degrees restricts flow. A fully closed handle (perpendicular) stops it entirely.
3. Check the Y-strainer / inline filter: Many Calgary systems have a mesh filter at the backflow preventer or at the main irrigation supply that catches debris. A clogged filter significantly reduces flow pressure. Unscrew the filter housing, remove and rinse the screen, reinstall.
4. Test pressure at a single zone: Activate the affected zone and watch the head performance on the first head you can easily reach. If rotors are spinning slowly or spray heads are misting instead of projecting, pressure at that zone is low. Compare with another zone that is working normally.
5. Check for a partial line break: A cracked lateral pipe dumps water into the soil before it reaches the heads. Walk the zone area during activation and look for abnormally wet patches, soggy ground, or reduced head output at one end of the zone.
6. Call municipal water supply: If all zones are equally affected and your indoor tests confirm reduced household pressure, the issue may be with the City of Calgary main pressure. This is rare but occurs in some communities during peak summer demand or maintenance periods.

Low Pressure by Calgary Neighbourhood — What to Know

Calgary’s water distribution network has significant pressure variation by neighbourhood. Higher-elevation communities (parts of Signal Hill, Christie Park, Patterson, Aspen Woods, and communities above the ridge in SW Calgary) typically receive lower municipal pressure — 40–50 PSI — which is at the lower end of what standard rotors require for full-throw radius. If your system was designed for higher-pressure neighbourhoods and you moved to a lower-pressure area, or if system conditions have changed since installation, a pressure assessment may reveal that a booster pump or zone redesign is needed.

Lower-elevation and some inner-city neighbourhoods (parts of Inglewood, Ramsay, Forest Lawn) sometimes receive 70–80 PSI — too high for spray heads, which mist rather than project at excessive pressure. Pressure-reducing heads or a pressure regulator solve this.
