What does spring sprinkler startup in Calgary involve?

Professional spring sprinkler startup in Calgary by J and G Irrigation includes six steps: slow pressurization of the system by opening the isolation valve gradually over 5 to 10 minutes to prevent water hammer; visual inspection of the backflow preventer, zone manifold, and above-grade fittings for winter freeze damage; City of Calgary certified backflow preventer test with results submitted to the City per Bylaw 20M88; zone-by-zone coverage walk with every head assessed for correct arc, radius, and retraction; controller programming update for the City odd/even schedule and current season runtime percentage; and rain sensor function verification.

When should I book spring sprinkler startup in Calgary?

Book Calgary spring sprinkler startup in April to secure a May service date. J and G Irrigation spring startup availability fills from mid-April onward as homeowners begin booking ahead of the May long weekend when most Calgary properties want their irrigation running. The optimal startup timing in Calgary is after the last frost risk date in mid-May but before the June 1 City of Calgary odd/even restriction start date, allowing the system to be fully commissioned and operating correctly before restrictions begin.

How much does spring sprinkler startup cost in Calgary?

Standalone spring sprinkler startup with City of Calgary certified backflow test costs $120 to $200 in Calgary depending on system zone count. Startup is included in J and G Irrigation annual maintenance plans at the plan-included rate, which is significantly lower than standalone pricing when combined with fall winterization and mid-season tune-up. The City certified backflow test is included in all J and G Irrigation startup service visits at no additional charge beyond the startup service fee.

How much does sprinkler winterization cost in Calgary?

Professional sprinkler winterization in Calgary costs $80 to $150 for most residential systems depending on the number of zones. J.G. Irrigation offers flat-rate pricing with no surprise fees. Call 587-433-4795 for an exact quote.

When should I winterize my sprinklers in Calgary?

Calgary sprinkler systems should be winterized before the first hard freeze, typically between late September and mid-October. Booking by September is recommended as appointment slots fill up quickly. A hard freeze (below -4°C overnight) can crack irrigation pipes within hours.

What happens if you don't winterize your sprinklers in Calgary?

Skipping winterization in Calgary can result in cracked pipes, burst valves, broken backflow preventers, and damaged sprinkler heads from ice expansion. Repair costs from freeze damage typically run $300 to $1,500 or more — far exceeding the cost of a professional blowout.

Can I winterize my own sprinkler system?

DIY sprinkler blowouts require a compressor rated at 20+ CFM at 50 PSI and precise knowledge of your zone layout. Improper technique can damage head diaphragms, crack PVC fittings, or leave water in low spots that will freeze. Most Calgary homeowners find professional blowout service the safer and more reliable option.

When should I turn on my sprinklers in Calgary in spring?

The safe window to activate your Calgary sprinkler system is mid-May to early June, once overnight temperatures are consistently above 0°C and the ground has fully thawed to at least 6 inches deep. Activating too early risks pipe damage from ground frost.

What does a spring sprinkler startup include in Calgary?

A professional spring startup includes slowly opening the main water supply valve, pressurizing each zone, inspecting every sprinkler head for damage, adjusting head rotation and arc, checking the backflow preventer, testing the controller schedule, and confirming full coverage across all zones.

How do I know if my sprinkler system has a leak?

Common signs of a Calgary sprinkler leak include soggy or waterlogged patches on your lawn, a sudden spike in your water bill, uneven watering across zones, sprinkler heads that stay up after the system shuts off, unusually green stripes in the grass, and soft or sinking spots in the yard.

How fast can J.G. Irrigation fix a broken sprinkler system?

J.G. Irrigation offers same-week sprinkler repair service across Calgary. Most residential repairs — broken heads, leaking valves, stuck pop-ups — are completed in 1 to 3 hours. Call 587-433-4795 or book online for priority scheduling.

How much does sprinkler repair cost in Calgary?

Spring Sprinkler Startup in Calgary: What Professional Startup Includes

Spring sprinkler startup in Calgary is not simply turning the water on — it is a structured service that verifies the system survived winter without damage, tests the backflow preventer as required by City of Calgary bylaw, walks every zone to confirm head coverage, and programs the controller for the City odd/even watering restriction and appropriate spring runtimes. A professional Calgary spring startup performed by J&G Irrigation takes 1.5-3 hours depending on system size and covers every component from the isolation valve through the zone heads.

Spring Startup Procedure — Step by Step

Slow pressurization: The isolation valve is opened very slowly (over 5-10 minutes) to allow the system to pressurize gradually, preventing water hammer that can split zone valves and pipe fittings weakened by freeze-thaw cycling.
Visual inspection of exposed components: The backflow preventer, zone manifold, and any above-grade fittings are inspected for visible damage from winter freeze events before the system is fully pressurized.
City of Calgary certified backflow test: The backflow preventer is tested by a certified cross-connection control tester and results submitted to the City. Required annually by Bylaw 20M88.
Zone-by-zone coverage walk: Every zone is run and walked completely. Each head is assessed for correct arc, radius, and retraction. A written list of every head needing adjustment or replacement is produced.
Controller programming: The controller schedule is updated for the current season, City odd/even restriction, current month runtime percentage, and smart controller ET data source verification.
Rain sensor test: Sensor function verified for correct activation and release.
