Sprinkler Head Adjustment Calgary: Arc, Radius and Height Setting Guide 2026

Sprinkler Head Adjustment in Calgary: Why Heads Go Out of Alignment

Calgary sprinkler heads regularly need adjustment because of three site-specific forces: freeze-thaw soil movement shifts head positions relative to adjacent heads and coverage zones; lawn mowers strike popup heads left above grade after wiper seal failure; and Calgary clay soil settlement over the first 1-3 years after installation can tilt popup risers off vertical, creating off-angle arcs. Head adjustment is one of the core deliverables in J&G Irrigation spring startup service visits — every head is walked and adjusted as needed during the zone-by-zone coverage inspection.

Types of Sprinkler Head Adjustments

Arc Adjustment

Arc is the coverage angle of a popup spray head (the portion of a circle that the head covers). Most Calgary residential popup spray heads use fixed arc nozzles (90°, 180°, 270°, or 360°), so arc adjustment means replacing the nozzle if the arc is wrong. Gear-drive rotor heads have adjustable arc (typically 40°-360°) set by a small adjustment tool inserted in a socket on top of the head. Calgary rotor arc commonly drifts after freeze-thaw soil movement shifts the head body relative to its set position.

Radius Adjustment

Radius (the coverage distance from the head) is adjusted by a small screw on the nozzle face of popup spray heads and MP Rotators. Decreasing the radius (closing the screw) reduces water throw for narrow zones where full radius would overshoot onto driveways or sidewalks. Increasing radius is not possible beyond the nozzle specification — an undersized nozzle for the zone width is the correct solution, not a radius increase.

Head Height Adjustment

A popup spray head should sit flush with the surrounding lawn surface when retracted. A head set too deep misses its top riser extension and leaves a visible gap in coverage. A head set too shallow is struck by mower blades. J&G Irrigation adjusts head height by raising or lowering the head body riser on the lateral pipe. For significantly settled heads, the lateral pipe connection fitting is adjusted or the lateral is partially re-routed.
