Sprinkler Head Not Rotating in Calgary: How to Fix Stuck Rotor Heads

A rotor head that is not rotating creates a dry strip through your lawn โ€” the head pops up and delivers water in one direction only instead of sweeping across the zone. Here is how to diagnose and fix a stuck Calgary rotor head, from J.G. Irrigation's repair team.

Why Calgary Rotor Heads Stop Rotating

Cause Symptom Fix
Dirt or debris in rotor gear Head pops up, streams in one direction, barely rotates Flush head โ€” run zone while pressing rotor down repeatedly to flush debris
Stripped drive gear (wear) Head pops up, nozzle stationary, gear spins freely when manual-rotated Replace head โ€” Hunter/Rain Bird rotor replacement $65-$120 installed
Clogged filter screen Weak stream, slow rotation, inconsistent arc Unscrew nozzle, remove and clean filter screen, reassemble
Freeze damage (spring) Head cracks visible, won't retract after zone off Replace head โ€” common after missed blowout
Soil/clay compaction around head body Head barely pops up, rotation stiff Excavate and reset head to correct grade; flush surround soil

DIY Flush Test for Stuck Calgary Rotor Heads

  1. Run the zone so the stuck head is active and under pressure
  2. While the head is popped up, press it down firmly with your thumb and hold for 3-5 seconds, then release โ€” repeat 4-6 times
  3. This creates a pressure surge that flushes debris from the rotor gear and filter screen
  4. If the head begins rotating after 3-4 flushes, the debris is cleared โ€” monitor for recurrence
  5. If no rotation improvement after 6 flushes, the rotor gear is likely stripped and the head needs replacement

When to Replace vs When to Flush

Replace the head when: the gear is stripped (spins freely when manually rotated with no resistance); the head body is cracked; the head fails to retract after the zone is off; or the head is 10+ years old and showing multiple symptoms simultaneously.

Try flushing first when: the head recently started the problem; there has been recent landscape work or heavy foot traffic near the head; it is spring startup (debris from winter is very common).
