Why do Calgary irrigation systems get runoff with popup spray heads?

Calgary popup spray heads with standard fixed nozzles apply water at 50 to 75mm per hour — a precipitation rate that far exceeds the infiltration capacity of Calgary clay soil, which typically absorbs only 6 to 12mm per hour. The water applied faster than the soil can absorb it flows across the surface as runoff, wasting 20 to 40 percent of each watering cycle. The solution is either cycle-and-soak controller programming to allow absorption time between cycles, or replacing fixed nozzles with rotary nozzles that apply water at 8 to 13mm per hour matching the clay absorption rate.

What is an MP rotator and why does J and G Irrigation use them in Calgary?

An MP rotator, or multi-stream rotary nozzle, is a sprinkler nozzle that screws into the same popup body as a standard fixed spray nozzle but applies water through multiple rotating streams rather than a fixed fan pattern. The rotating stream delivery reduces the precipitation rate from the 50 to 75mm per hour of a fixed spray nozzle to 8 to 13mm per hour — a rate that Calgary clay soil absorbs without surface runoff. J and G Irrigation specifies MP rotators on all Calgary spray zone installations as the solution to the runoff problem that fixed spray nozzles create on Calgary clay soil.

When should I use a rotor head instead of a spray head in Calgary?

Use a gear-driven rotor head for Calgary turf zones requiring coverage radius over 5 metres. Rotor heads cover 5 to 15 metre radius, making them the correct choice for open lawn areas that spray heads cannot reach efficiently. Rotors apply water at 8 to 15mm per hour, within Calgary clay soil infiltration capacity, without requiring cycle-and-soak programming. J and G Irrigation uses Hunter PGP and Rain Bird 5000 gear-driven rotors as the standard Calgary residential rotor specification for all zones over 5 metre radius.

How much does sprinkler winterization cost in Calgary?

Professional sprinkler winterization in Calgary costs $80 to $150 for most residential systems depending on the number of zones. J.G. Irrigation offers flat-rate pricing with no surprise fees. Call 587-433-4795 for an exact quote.

When should I winterize my sprinklers in Calgary?

Calgary sprinkler systems should be winterized before the first hard freeze, typically between late September and mid-October. Booking by September is recommended as appointment slots fill up quickly. A hard freeze (below -4°C overnight) can crack irrigation pipes within hours.

What happens if you don't winterize your sprinklers in Calgary?

Skipping winterization in Calgary can result in cracked pipes, burst valves, broken backflow preventers, and damaged sprinkler heads from ice expansion. Repair costs from freeze damage typically run $300 to $1,500 or more — far exceeding the cost of a professional blowout.

Can I winterize my own sprinkler system?

DIY sprinkler blowouts require a compressor rated at 20+ CFM at 50 PSI and precise knowledge of your zone layout. Improper technique can damage head diaphragms, crack PVC fittings, or leave water in low spots that will freeze. Most Calgary homeowners find professional blowout service the safer and more reliable option.

When should I turn on my sprinklers in Calgary in spring?

The safe window to activate your Calgary sprinkler system is mid-May to early June, once overnight temperatures are consistently above 0°C and the ground has fully thawed to at least 6 inches deep. Activating too early risks pipe damage from ground frost.

What does a spring sprinkler startup include in Calgary?

A professional spring startup includes slowly opening the main water supply valve, pressurizing each zone, inspecting every sprinkler head for damage, adjusting head rotation and arc, checking the backflow preventer, testing the controller schedule, and confirming full coverage across all zones.

How do I know if my sprinkler system has a leak?

Common signs of a Calgary sprinkler leak include soggy or waterlogged patches on your lawn, a sudden spike in your water bill, uneven watering across zones, sprinkler heads that stay up after the system shuts off, unusually green stripes in the grass, and soft or sinking spots in the yard.

How fast can J.G. Irrigation fix a broken sprinkler system?

J.G. Irrigation offers same-week sprinkler repair service across Calgary. Most residential repairs — broken heads, leaking valves, stuck pop-ups — are completed in 1 to 3 hours. Call 587-433-4795 or book online for priority scheduling.

How much does sprinkler repair cost in Calgary?

Sprinkler repair in Calgary typically costs $75 to $250 for common issues like broken heads, stuck pop-ups, or clogged nozzles. Valve replacements run $100 to $300. Underground pipe repairs depend on depth and length but usually fall between $200 and $600 for residential systems.
