Sprinkler Controller Not Working in Calgary: Troubleshooting and Repair Guide
A non-responsive irrigation controller is one of the most common Calgary service calls in spring. Before calling for repair, run through this diagnostic checklist from J.G. Irrigation's IA-certified technicians — many controller issues are DIY-fixable in 5 minutes.
Controller Troubleshooting Checklist: Calgary
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause | DIY Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blank display | Power loss, blown transformer fuse | Check outlet and transformer fuse — common in spring startup |
| Display shows ERR or dashes | Short circuit in a zone wire | Disconnect zones one at a time to find the shorted zone |
| One zone won't turn on | Failed valve, broken wire, bad zone output | Manual valve test: open the zone valve manually — if it runs, the wire or controller output is the issue |
| All zones work manually but not on schedule | Clock reset (usually after power outage) | Check the clock setting — spring power outages reset many controllers to 12:00am startup |
| Controller shows “rain delay” and won't run | Rain sensor activated or rain delay programmed | Check rain sensor status and clear any programmed rain delay |
| Zones run at wrong times | Calgary Water odd/even day settings incorrect | Reprogram seasonal schedule for Calgary Water restrictions |
When to Call for Controller Repair
Call J.G. Irrigation at 587-433-4795 if: the display shows zone output error codes; multiple zones are failing with no obvious wiring cause; the transformer has failed (no output voltage on meter test); or the controller is 15+ years old and showing intermittent failures. Our $90 flat diagnostic includes full controller function test, wiring diagnosis, and a quote for repair or replacement.
Rachio 3 Upgrade: Best Decision for Most Calgary Homeowners
If your Calgary controller is 10+ years old and failing, a Rachio 3 upgrade ($280-$380 installed) is almost always better value than repairing an old controller. Rachio 3 adds weather intelligence, Calgary Water restriction scheduling, and remote management — significantly reducing water use compared to a fixed-schedule controller.
