1. Controller Set to “Off” or “Rain” Mode

The most common cause — and the easiest fix. Check your controller display. If it shows “OFF,” “RAIN,” or “SEASONAL ADJUST 0%,” the system is intentionally paused. Switch to “RUN” or “AUTO” mode and test each zone manually from the controller.

2. Main Shutoff Valve Closed

After a winterization, the main irrigation shutoff valve (typically near the meter or in the basement) is closed. If your system was professionally winterized but wasn’t started up in spring, check that this valve is fully open. A quarter-turn ball valve should be parallel to the pipe to be open.

3. Failed Solenoid Valve

Each zone has a solenoid valve that opens electrically when the controller signals it. When a solenoid coil burns out, that zone goes dead — other zones still work fine. Test: trigger zone manually from controller. If you hear a click at the valve box but water doesn’t flow, the solenoid has failed. Solenoid replacement: $80–$175.

4. Broken Zone Wire

Control wires run underground from your controller to each valve. A wire can break from frost heaving, digging, root intrusion, or rodent damage. Symptom: one zone completely dead, no click sound at valve box. Wire trace and repair: $100–$300.

The diagnostic order matters — start with the simplest checks before calling for service:

1. Check the indoor shutoff valve: Confirm it is in the fully open position. After spring startup, some homeowners partially close it — a valve that is 25% closed cuts available flow significantly and prevents zones from pressurizing correctly.
2. Check the controller display: Is it powered? Is the program active or in “Off/Rain Delay”? Look for a “Rain Delay” icon or an Off/Pause indicator. Many Rachio and Hunter controllers automatically enter rain delay mode after sensing precipitation.
3. Test manual zone activation: Activate each zone manually from the controller (not via schedule). If a zone runs manually but not on schedule, the issue is controller programming. If no zones run manually, the issue is likely electrical or with the main valve.
