Sprinkler System Not Working Calgary? Troubleshooting Guide for Common Irrigation Problems 2026

Sprinkler system not working in Calgary — irrigation technician troubleshooting valve box and zone controller

Your irrigation system stops working and you’re not sure why. Before you call a contractor — or to know what to tell them when you do — this guide walks through the most common Calgary irrigation problems, what causes them, and which you can fix yourself vs which need a professional. J.G. Irrigation handles all of these issues for Calgary homeowners. Call 587-433-4795 if you’d rather skip the troubleshooting and book a service call.

How to Diagnose Your Irrigation Problem: Start Here

Before diagnosing individual zones or heads, answer these three questions:

  1. Is the controller on and programmed? Check that the controller is powered (display active), the program has active watering days that include today, and the current time is correct. A blown fuse or lost programming after a power outage are very common “no water” causes.
  2. Is the water supply on? Check that the main irrigation shutoff valve is fully open. This is typically a ball valve or gate valve in your basement or utility room at the point where the irrigation line branches off the main supply. After winter, it’s easy to forget to open this valve during spring startup.
  3. Is this a system-wide problem or a single-zone problem? If no zones run, the issue is likely the controller, main valve, or power supply. If only one or two zones fail, the issue is likely a specific valve, wiring fault, or head problem in those zones.

Problem 1: No Zones Run at All

Symptoms: You trigger your controller (manually or via schedule) and nothing happens. No zones activate, no water flows anywhere.

Possible Causes and DIY Checks

  • Controller not powered: Check the controller display. If blank or showing an error, check the power outlet and fuse. Many Hunter and Rain Bird controllers have a 1-amp fuse inside the cover panel — replace it if blown.
  • Power outage reset programming: Some controllers lose programming during a power outage. Re-enter the watering schedule. (Tip: photograph your controller settings each spring so you have a reference.)
  • Irrigation water supply valve closed: Check the main irrigation shutoff valve at the entry point in your home. This is almost always the cause of a post-startup “no water anywhere” situation.
  • Backflow preventer shut-off valves closed: The backflow preventer has two ball valves flanking the body. If either was closed for winter and not fully re-opened during spring startup, no water will flow to any zone. Open both to the fully open position (handle parallel to the pipe).
  • Master valve (if installed) not opening: Some systems have a master valve that must be energized by the controller before any zone valve opens. If the master valve wiring fails, no zones can run. Test by bypassing the master valve at the controller terminal block (remove MV wire and test a zone).

When to call J.G. Irrigation: If supply valves are open, controller is powered, and still nothing runs — there may be a controller failure, wiring fault to the master valve, or pressure problem at the backflow preventer. Call 587-433-4795.

Problem 2: One Zone Won’t Run

Symptoms: All other zones run normally, but Zone X does nothing when activated.

Possible Causes and DIY Checks

  • Valve solenoid failure: Each zone has a solenoid valve that opens when it receives a 24VAC signal from the controller. Solenoids fail over time — especially if they’ve been subjected to voltage spikes from lightning or freeze damage. You can manually activate a valve to test if the issue is electrical (solenoid) or mechanical (valve body). Turn the solenoid 1/4 turn counter-clockwise to manually open it. If water flows from that zone when manually opened but not electrically, the solenoid or its wiring is the issue.
  • Wiring fault to zone: A broken wire between the controller and the zone valve is common after aeration, dethatching, or any time someone has dug near the valve area. Check the wiring path for cuts or disconnections at junction connectors (waterproof wire nuts in valve boxes).
  • Controller zone terminal failure: Try moving the zone’s wire to an unused terminal on the controller and reprogramming that terminal. If the zone now works, the original terminal is faulty.
  • Valve diaphragm fouled: Small debris can lodge in the valve diaphragm, preventing it from opening even with correct electrical signal. A technician can disassemble and clean or replace the diaphragm (a $15–30 part plus labour).

When to call J.G. Irrigation: Zone valve replacements and wiring fault repairs are straightforward professional service calls. Call 587-433-4795 to book. See our sprinkler valve repair guide for full details on signs and costs.

Problem 3: A Zone Runs but Coverage Is Poor

Symptoms: A zone activates and water flows, but some heads aren’t popping up, some are spraying poorly, or there are obvious dry spots in the zone’s area.

Possible Causes and DIY Checks

  • Broken or sunken head: Walk the zone perimeter while it’s running. Visually identify heads that aren’t popping up (sunken flush with the grass) or spraying at low pressure (drizzling instead of a full spray pattern). Heads can be broken by lawn mowers, vehicle traffic (near driveways), or freeze damage.
  • Clogged nozzle: If one head is spraying weakly in all directions, the nozzle may be clogged with debris. Remove the nozzle (twist the riser cap counter-clockwise while the zone is off), clean or replace the nozzle (a $3–8 part for most Hunter/RainBird nozzles), and reinstall.
  • Low zone pressure: If all heads in a zone are weak simultaneously, the zone may be overloaded (too many heads for the available flow), or the valve is not opening fully (weak solenoid or partially fouled diaphragm). Pressure-regulated bodies can also lose their regulator spring over time, reducing operating pressure.
  • Head out of adjustment: Spray heads can be rotated from their correct spray direction. Stand over the head and watch its arc — it should be spraying toward other heads in the zone, not into beds, fences, or the sidewalk. Adjust by twisting the nozzle to the correct starting position.

When to call J.G. Irrigation: If more than 2–3 heads need replacement, or if a zone has pressure problems across all heads, a technician can diagnose and fix in a single visit. Call 587-433-4795.

Problem 4: Zone Runs Constantly (Won’t Shut Off)

Symptoms: A zone continues running long after the scheduled watering time, or won’t shut off when commanded by the controller.

Possible Causes and DIY Checks

  • Valve diaphragm failure: A torn or degraded valve diaphragm prevents the valve from sealing fully. The valve stays partially or fully open even when the solenoid is de-energized. You can diagnose this by manually turning off the controller and checking if the zone stops — if it doesn’t, the valve diaphragm is likely the culprit.
  • Debris holding valve open: A pebble or debris fragment lodged in the valve seat prevents it from closing fully, causing a continuous slow flow. Disassembling and cleaning the valve body often resolves this without a parts replacement.
  • Controller wiring short: A wiring short can send a continuous 24VAC signal to a zone valve. Test by disconnecting the zone wire from the controller terminal — if the zone immediately stops, the valve is fine and the issue is a wiring short in the field.

Calgary note: A zone stuck open in late season (September–October) is urgent — continuous watering can saturate the soil ahead of winter, increasing frost heave risk. Call 587-433-4795 for same-week service in Calgary.

Problem 5: Sprinkler System Leaking at the Head

Symptoms: Water seeps or trickles from a specific head location even when the irrigation system is off.

Possible Causes

  • Low-head drainage: When the zone turns off, water in the lateral pipe drains down to the lowest head in the zone through the head’s check valve seat. If the check valve wears out or is missing, water drains freely after each cycle. This is very common in Calgary yards with grade changes — the head at the bottom of a slope drains the entire lateral after every cycle. Solution: replace with a head that includes a built-in check valve (Hunter Pro-Spray heads with check valves are specified by J.G. Irrigation for all sloped zones).
  • Broken head body allowing pressurized leakage: A cracked head body (from mower or freeze damage) can leak even under static pressure. Replace the head body.

Problem 6: Controller Not Turning On at Scheduled Time

Symptoms: You’re home on a scheduled watering morning and nothing runs, even though the zone activates when you manually trigger it at the controller.

Possible Causes

  • Clock is wrong: Check that the controller’s current time is correct. After a power outage, many controllers revert to 12:00 AM, shifting all scheduled programs by several hours.
  • Wrong AM/PM: Many controllers allow setting a start time of 5:00 AM or 5:00 PM — if PM is selected instead of AM, the system runs at the wrong time of day (and during Calgary’s Stage 2 watering restriction prohibited window).
  • Watering days not active: Check the controller’s watering day setting. If it’s set to Odd days and today is an even-numbered date, the system correctly does not run. Verify your odd/even assignment for your address matches what’s programmed. See our Calgary water restrictions guide.
  • Rain sensor holding off the system: If your system has a rain sensor (a small white dome usually mounted on the house eave or fence), a recent rain event or a stuck sensor can prevent the system from running. Check the sensor indicator light and manually test for an override setting.
