Sprinkler Zone Not Turning Off in Calgary: Troubleshooting a Stuck Zone Valve

A zone that won't turn off is a water-wasting emergency. Calgary Water restriction compliance is also at risk if a zone runs continuously outside permitted hours. Here is how to diagnose and fix a stuck-open zone, from J.G. Irrigation's IA-certified repair team.

Why a Calgary Sprinkler Zone Won't Turn Off: Common Causes

Cause Symptoms DIY Fix?
Debris in valve diaphragm seat Zone runs when off; stops if manual solenoid closed Yes β€” disassemble valve and flush diaphragm
Torn valve diaphragm Zone runs continuously; pressure at valve is normal Yes β€” diaphragm replacement kit available at hardware stores ($8-$15)
Solenoid stuck energized Zone runs; controller shows zone as off Yes β€” manually close solenoid by turning ΒΌ turn clockwise
Wiring short (zone wire grounded) Zone runs; controller may show error; closing solenoid stops it No β€” call J.G. Irrigation: $90 diagnostic
Controller zone output stuck on Zone runs; controller terminal shows voltage when zone is off No β€” controller replacement or repair needed

Immediate Steps: Stop the Zone Right Now

  1. Locate the valve box for the affected zone (usually in a green valve box in the yard β€” check near the perimeter of the area that is running)
  2. Turn the solenoid clockwise ΒΌ turn β€” this manually closes the valve regardless of the electrical signal. The zone will stop immediately
  3. If you cannot locate the valve box: Close the irrigation main shutoff (in the basement or at the meter) to stop all zones
  4. After stopping the zone, set the controller to turn off the program for that zone until repaired

DIY Repair: Diaphragm Flush and Replacement

Turn off the irrigation main. Open the valve cap (4-6 screws). Remove the diaphragm β€” inspect for debris, tears, or hardening. Flush the valve body with water. If the diaphragm is torn or hardened (common in Calgary after 8-12 years), replace with a brand-matching diaphragm kit. Reassemble and test. This repair takes 20-30 minutes and costs $8-$15 in parts.
