What Is an Irrigation Zone?
An irrigation zone is a group of sprinkler heads controlled by a single valve that all operate simultaneously. When a zone is “on,” water flows through that valve and out of every head in that group at the same time. Each zone is controlled independently — your controller can water Zone 1 (front lawn) for 20 minutes in the morning, then Zone 2 (side yard drip) for 30 minutes, then Zone 3 (backyard) in the evening.
Zones exist because your water supply line can only deliver a certain volume of water per minute (measured in GPM — gallons per minute). Trying to run too many heads at once drops pressure below what the heads need to work correctly. Zones let you divide your system into manageable groups that work within your available water flow.
What Determines How Many Zones You Need in Calgary?
1. Your Available Water Flow (GPM)
