Water Sprinkler System Calgary: Underground Lawn Irrigation Installation Guide 2026

Underground Water Sprinkler System in Calgary: How It Works

An underground water sprinkler system in Calgary consists of buried polyethylene or PVC lateral pipes connected to popup spray and rotor heads that retract flush with the lawn surface when not in use. The system connects to the household water supply through a City-registered backflow preventer, is controlled by a programmable timer, and requires annual spring startup, backflow testing, and fall winterization to operate reliably through Calgary winters.

Underground Sprinkler System Components for Calgary

• Water connection and backflow preventer: A dedicated connection to the cold water supply with a City of Calgary registered Pressure Vacuum Breaker or Double Check Valve assembly. City permit required for the connection.
• Zone control manifold: A bank of solenoid-operated zone valves, typically installed in the utility room or in a valve box near the water connection, that open and close to direct water to each irrigation zone.
• Buried lateral pipe: Flexible polyethylene pipe (preferred in Calgary for freeze-thaw resistance) buried at 30-45 cm depth, connecting the zone valves to the popup heads in each zone.
• Popup spray and rotor heads: Heads that extend 2.5-10 cm when the zone activates and retract flush with the surface when the zone closes. Calgary specifications: rotor heads at 8-12 mm/hour precipitation rate for clay soil zones, MP Rotators for medium zones.
• Smart Wi-Fi controller: Programs zone run times, schedules, and ET adjustments. Connects to weather data for automatic Calgary Chinook and rainfall response.
