Winter Sprinkler Damage Calgary: What Freeze Damage Looks Like and How to Spot It
Calgary homeowners who skipped or had an inadequate fall blowout often discover freeze damage at spring startup. Knowing what freeze damage looks like โ and what it costs โ helps you respond immediately rather than running a damaged system through the season. J.G. Irrigation's IA-certified technicians diagnose freeze damage at every spring startup visit.
The Most Common Calgary Freeze Damage Patterns
1. Cracked Backflow Preventer Body
What it looks like: Water weeping or streaming from the backflow preventer assembly when the system is pressurized. The brass body may have a visible crack, or the damage may be in a bonnet or side port that is not immediately visible. The system cannot hold full pressure โ heads that should pop to full height stay partially extended or fail to activate.
Cause: Water remaining in the backflow preventer body after a missed or inadequate blowout freezes and expands, cracking the brass housing.
Repair cost: $180-$350 for backflow preventer replacement.
2. Cracked Zone Valve Bodies
What it looks like: Zone valve box filled with water at startup; continuous flow from the valve body even when the zone is not activated. Valve body may show a visible crack at the solenoid port or along the body casting.
Repair cost: $90-$230 per valve.
3. Burst Lateral Pipe
What it looks like: Soggy wet area in lawn after the zone runs; one zone with noticeably lower pressure than others; ground depression forming after system is in use.
Cause: Water in shallow lateral pipe (within 12 inches of surface) freezes and bursts. Calgary's standard trench depth of 18 inches provides freeze protection for the main line, but late-season late-connection shallow lateral sections can still freeze in severe cold.
Repair cost: $150-$350 depending on break location and depth.
What Does Not Freeze (Usually)
Calgary's standard 18-inch trench depth protects main line pipe from freeze damage in all but the most extreme and prolonged cold events. The components most vulnerable to freeze damage are those that hold water in exposed or shallow positions: backflow preventers (above grade, exposed), valve bodies (just below grade), and heads (the residual water in head bodies).
What to Do at Spring Startup
Do not open the main valve yourself if you skipped blowout last fall โ call J.G. Irrigation for a startup visit first. A slow professional startup with pressure monitoring catches damage before the system is fully pressurized, preventing a cracked backflow preventer from flooding your mechanical room. Diagnostic included in startup pricing.
